Specialist assessment

We spend time listening to your concerns.

You won’t feel rushed. Connect The Dots Neuropsychology spends time interviewing parents or carers, along with your child, so we can truly understand concerns and difficulties. We take a detailed developmental history, from information about pregnancy and birth, through to how a child is doing right now – in their learning environment, at home and with their peers. We talk to educators and other health professionals.

We tailor our assessments.

Your child will complete a comprehensive and individually-tailored set of standardised neuropsychological tests. This might include the WISC-V, ADOS, WIAT-III. Learn more about the tests we use here. We might assess your child’s attention, working memory, processing speed or academic skills, as well as their emotional wellbeing, and social communication skills. What we do depends on the family and referrer’s concerns.

Parents and educators also complete a range of questionnaires. Those results, together with information from home and school, help us form a diagnosis (where appropriate) and give you an understanding.

A diagnosis

We work out whether your child’s difficulties can be explained by a specific diagnosis.

Diagnoses we often consider include:

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Specific Learning Disorders (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia)

  • Giftedness

  • Intellectual Disability (ID)

  • Social Communication Disorder

  • Global Developmental Delay

  • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)

Understanding

With true understanding, you can put your child on their best path forward.

Many families tell us that after completing our assessments, they better understand why their child is experiencing difficulties and how they can help them overcome challenges to reach their potential. This is our goal for you too, and goes beyond simply providing a diagnosis or test score.

First, we take you through assessment results, explore a diagnosis if there is one, then discuss recommendations for intervention. We help you understand your child’s strengths, and how you can capitalise on them.

Finally, we write a detailed report that you can share with educators and other professionals. Our reports are clear, concise and aimed at ensuring everyone working with your child understands them as well as we do.

Support and funding

We collaborate and advocate.

We work with children, families, carers and educators, whether at a kindergarten, primary or secondary level. Our neuropsychologists can visit your child’s place of learning and help educators understand your child’s challenges and advocate for their needs.

We’ll help you explore options for learning adjustment and funding applications, such as the Program For Students With Disabilities (government schools), Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) for VCE students and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
